He was secured with spunyarn and kept restrained until he was asked to work again. Cocking refused to cooperate, and Hill challenged the captain, showing defiance. He stole a boat with 3 others trying to desert the Catalpa in Bunbury. He was said to be the ringleader of the desertion. He was detained in Bunbury because he struck and officer. It is noted that Captain Anthony was glad he was gone as he was 'a desperate fellow'.
He was released after serving his 7 day sentence and attempted to rejoin the Catalpa. He was refused.

Frank Perry was the son of Manuel Pereira Sarmento and Christina Jacinth. He was born in 1858 on the Island of Pico, Azores. At the age of seventeen, he joined the crew of the bark Catalpa. The ship was anchored off Fayal to load supplies before embarking on the final leg of its lengthy journey to waters off Australia. He stayed on the Catalpa with Samuel Smith when Captain Anthony went ashore in Fremantle.
